What good are rocks!?!

Today I had a table at a local community festival. Fortunately it was free because i made a whopping $1.00. (yes my decimal is in the right place.). The good part is i got to spend time with my mom and I met a group of girl scouts that made the last hour interesting.

Now on my table i always have a basket of shiny rocks, usually 2 or 3 for $1. (yes, that's where i made the $1.00. This basket usually has some agates, some quartz, and other miscellaneous stones. I'm always surprised by the different type of parents out there. Some kids will spend a lot of time feeling, looking at and asking about the rocks. They are usually followed by a parent that has no desire to allow for their child's interests. I always want to tell them, it's only a buck!!

So i usually try to explain why having a good rock collection is important. Every kid will have to do atleast one presentation if not one or more a year. What's better than to have rocks that your child is interested in and can talk about. And you guessed it, the child usually walks away empty handed. And just to clarify, i am a parent and i have stepped on many a rock in the middle of the night while checking on my kids. I figure it's little enough to support their interests!!

so i hope that as parents we support and supply those things that interest our children!!

You are so right. I see parents chasing all sorts of great things for their kids and missing those smaller opportunities to let them follow their interest. Your post made me think of some beads I got in the mail the other day. My 2 year old helped me open each little bag. The faux sea glass strands seemed to catch her eye and she insisted they be dropped on the arm of her chair. I left them there for 3 days until it was clear she wouldn't notice the, tidied away.
